This article has been updated as of May 13, 2026 to keep the focus on confirmed draft and contract facts.
Penn State Career
Abdul Carter played three seasons at Penn State and became one of the program’s most productive modern defenders. NCAA.com’s career table lists him with 42 games, 172 total tackles, 39.5 tackles for loss, 23 sacks, 14 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, and one interception.
His 2024 season drove his draft stock. NCAA.com lists his final-year production at 68 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, four pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. Penn State’s official release named him the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Lineman of the Year for 2024.
2025 NFL Draft
The New York Giants selected Carter with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Penn State University’s draft recap noted that he was the school’s highest overall pick since Saquon Barkley went No. 2 to the Giants in 2018.
That selection also made Carter one of five Penn State players drafted in 2025, along with Tyler Warren, K.J. Winston, Jaylen Reed, and Kobe King.
Rookie Contract
The Giants announced Carter’s rookie signing in May 2025. Big Blue View reported the slotted value at $45.255 million with a prorated signing bonus of $29.552 million.
For site accuracy, this page should describe the contract as a reported slotted rookie deal rather than using it to make assumptions about future NFL performance.
Penn State Impact
Carter’s departure left Penn State without its best 2024 pass rusher and forced the defensive front to redistribute edge pressure. His college profile remains a major player-development example for the program, but the 2025 and 2026 Penn State depth charts need to be evaluated without treating his production as replaceable by default.
The roster lesson is specific. Penn State could not simply ask one returning player to copy Carter’s 2024 role. His move from off-ball linebacker to edge created a rare combination of first-step speed, pursuit range, and backfield production. Once he left, the defense needed more snaps from Dani Dennis-Sutton, Max Granville, interior pressure, and simulated-pressure packages instead of a single like-for-like replacement.
For recruiting and alumni coverage, Carter also gives Penn State a clear development story. He arrived as an elite linebacker prospect, changed roles, won major Big Ten defensive honors, became a top-three NFL pick, and signed his rookie deal before training camp. Those facts are strong enough without assigning a specific NFL ceiling.
2025 Rookie Context
Carter’s rookie season with the Giants should be evaluated separately from his Penn State profile. ESPN’s public player page lists him with 43 total tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 2025. That professional production belongs in alumni updates, while this page remains focused on the draft bridge from Penn State to New York.
