Penn State Portal Eve Update: Cousins, Donkoh, Speca, Harvey, and the January Window

May 13, 2026
Roster Update

A corrected portal-eve roster update on Penn State's retained offensive linemen, defensive departures, and how the January window actually played out.

This article has been updated as of May 13, 2026 to replace pre-window language with a completed January portal summary. The old version was written before the window fully unfolded; the current version should tell readers what actually happened.

Offensive Line Retention

Cooper Cousins and Anthony Donkoh were important retention wins for Matt Campbell’s first roster. Local returning-player trackers also listed Garrett Sexton among returning offensive linemen, while Andrew Rappleyea remained part of the tight end picture.

That mattered because Penn State was already losing major offensive pieces to the NFL Draft and transfer portal. Keeping experienced offensive linemen gave the staff a base for Rocco Becht and the reworked run game.

The page should not use invented comparisons or private staff evaluations to explain those returns. It is enough to say that Cousins and Donkoh were verified returning offensive linemen in a roster window where stability was scarce.

Defensive Departures

The defensive side did lose players. Jaylen Harvey and Anthony Speca were among the portal names reported during the January window, along with Xavier Gilliam, Braz Thomas, Keon Wylie, Zuriah Fisher, Sam Siafa, and others in local portal lists.

That turnover intersected with NFL departures and a new defensive staff. D’Anton Lynn, Ikaika Malloe, Tyson Veidt, Terry Smith, Deon Broomfield, and Christian Smith inherited a defense that needed both retention and transfer help.

The Window Outcome

The January window became much larger than a normal small attrition cycle. Centre Daily Times later reported that 47 Penn State players entered the portal during the open window, with Cam Wallace the only one who withdrew and returned.

That number is the reason the article should not frame January as a simple “portal eve” note anymore. It became one of the defining roster events of the Campbell transition.

Current Depth-Chart Meaning

For 2026 depth-chart work, the useful distinction is between retained anchors and departed names. Cousins and Donkoh remain relevant to the offensive line. Speca, Harvey, Gilliam, Thomas, and other departures should not be treated as current Penn State depth-chart options.

The same logic applies across the roster: if a player later transferred, entered the NFL Draft, or changed teams, current pages must update that status rather than preserving January uncertainty.

The most useful way to read the portal-eve moment now is as a baseline. It captured which players were still being retained before the larger wave of exits and additions. After the window closed, the article needed to be updated with outcomes rather than left as a forecast.

That distinction matters for readers. A dated roster tracker can be valuable if it clearly says when the information was true and what changed later. It becomes low-quality content if it leaves old uncertainty in place after the public record has moved on.

Sources and update notes

This update was checked against Onward State returning-player coverage, Centre Daily Times’ January transfer-portal list, The Sentinel and Altoona Mirror portal reports, Penn State’s current roster references, and GoPSUSports staff materials for the 2026 defensive structure. The current depth chart should be treated as the live roster view.
