Returning Penn State back who withdrew from the transfer portal. Wallace gives the 2026 room continuity behind the transfer additions, but his carry share should be treated as open competition.
Cam Wallace is one of the more useful holdover stories in Penn State's 2026 backfield. He entered the transfer portal after the 2025 season but withdrew and stayed, which gave the new staff an in-house running back at a time when the room was already being rebuilt through departures and transfers.
Wallace should not be treated as the automatic lead back. James Peoples and Carson Hansen changed the room quickly, and Quinton Martin Jr. also remains part of the in-house competition. Wallace's value is that he already knows the Penn State environment and gives the staff another option if the backfield becomes a rotation.
For the depth chart, Wallace is a depth and competition piece with a path to carries if he proves dependable in protection, ball security, and special teams. The portal withdrawal makes him relevant, but his final role still has to be earned on the field.
In a rebuilt running back room, staying power has value. Wallace gives Penn State an internal benchmark for the transfer backs and another option if injuries or specialization change the rotation.
