As Penn State prepares to face Clemson in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl on December 27, the roster look significantly different than it did in the regular season finale.
Interim Head Coach Terry Smith confirmed today that three more key starters have elected to opt out of the game to begin their preparations for the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Opt-Out List Grows
- Nicholas Singleton (RB): The record-breaking running back finishes his senior season with over 1,000 rushing yards. His departure means more opportunities for younger backs in New York.
- Vega Ioane (OL): A stalwart on the interior offensive line, Ioane’s physical presence will be missed against Clemson’s front.
- Zakee Wheatley (S): The veteran safety and defensive leader joins fellow defender Zane Durant on the opt-out list.
”Next Man Up”
“We support these young men in their next steps,” Smith said after Sunday’s practice. “They’ve given everything to this university. Now, simply put, it is ‘next man up.’ This is a tremendous opportunity for our young guys to show what they can do on a big stage.”
Portal Departures
In addition to the opt-outs, cornerback Elliot Washington II and tight end Joey Schlaffer have officially entered the transfer portal and will not be with the team for the bowl game.
Despite the attrition, the energy at practice has been high, with the team rallying around Smith for one final game in the 2025 season.
