Portal Movers: Davis, Vakalahi & Taupaki Commit to Lions

January 9, 2026
Transfer Portal

The transfer portal window is closing, but Penn State isn't done. The Lions secure commitments from Boston College safety Omarion Davis and defensive tackles Dallas Vakalahi and Siale Taupaki.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — As the January 16 transfer portal deadline approaches, Penn State continues to be aggressively active, landing three key defensive pieces on Thursday and Friday.

Secondary Reinforcement: Omarion Davis

The most notable addition is safety Omarion Davis, a transfer from Boston College. Davis brings immediate starting experience to a secondary that is retooling after the departures of several veterans. Known for his range and hard-hitting style, Davis fits D’Anton Lynn’s scheme perfectly. He reportedly committed to Penn State after a visit earlier this week.

Beefing Up the Trenches

Defensive line depth was a clear priority for Matt Campbell’s staff this week. The Lions secured commitments from two defensive tackles to bolster the interior:

  1. Dallas Vakalahi (Utah): A stout run-stopper coming from the formidable Utes defense. Vakalahi brings physicality and Pac-12 (now Big 12) experience.
  2. Siale Taupaki (UCLA): Another West Coast addition, Taupaki adds rotational depth and size to the defensive front.

Iowa State Connection Continues

In addition to the defensive scholarship players, the Lions continued to raid Campbell’s former roster. Gabe Burkle (TE) and Brett Eskildsen (WR) have also confirmed they will join the program, adding familiarity with the offensive system.

Outgoing: Xavier Gilliam

On the other side of the ledger, defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam has announced he will transfer to Tennessee. Gilliam, who saw limited action, will look for a fresh start with the Volunteers.

Analysis: Fitting the Lynn Scheme

These additions are not random; they are tailored to Defensive Coordinator D’Anton Lynn’s specific structural needs.

  • Omarion Davis vs. King Mack: While the departing King Mack was known for elite speed, Davis brings a “box safety” physicality that Mack lacked. In 2025 at Boston College, Davis recorded multiple tackles for loss and forced fumbles. His “thumper” profile pairs perfectly with Zakee Wheatley’s deep-range coverage, allowing Lynn to disguise coverages more effectively in his 2-4-5 nickel packages.
  • Vakalahi & Taupaki: Lynn’s multiple 3-4 front generally requires heavier interior linemen to eat double teams, freeing up linebackers like Tony Rojas. Siale Taupaki (325 lbs) offers that anchor presence that was occasionally missing in Manny Diaz’s speed-focused front.

With roster spots filling up fast, Penn State’s 2026 squad is taking clear shape. The focus is squarely on depth and experience as the “Campbell Era” prepares for its debut season.
